KOVALAM AND BEACHES OF SOUTHERN KERALA
Kovalam is the main beach resort of Kerala and is just half an hour from Trivandrum Airport. It has a number of popular beaches, including the famous Lighthouse Beach. Much of the beach area can only be reached on foot which gives Kovalam its village atmosphere. There is a wide range of hotels and a number of restaurants, shops and tailors. This tourist infrastructure gives the place a lively character.

South of Kovalam there is a string of beaches running south towards the Tamil Nadu border. Staying at a resort along one of these beaches offers a more ‘exclusive’ experience and if you want the shops and restaurants of Kovalam it is only a short distance away. The land rises quite steeply in places along the southern coast, which means that beach access is not always easy. If you have mobility problem please ask our advice about suitable hotels.

Please note: the waters all along this coast can often have strong currents and you should seek local advice before swimming in the sea.

Although there are a large number of hotels in Kovalam, they are mostly budget/simple hotels with rooms blocked by the package tour companies. This means that it can be quite difficult to obtain rooms for the independent visitor, but if there is a particular hotel you are interested in please ask us.
